The South Holston River offers exceptional fly fishing opportunities, particularly for brown and rainbow trout, along with some brook trout. The river is renowned as one of the premier tailwater fisheries in the Southeastern United States. The fishing season spans the year, with spring bringing hatches of mayflies, caddisflies, and midges, making it ideal for dry fly fishing. Summer is productive, with early mornings and late evenings recommended due to warmer water temperatures. Fall sees active trout and stunning foliage, with streamer patterns being effective. Despite the challenges of winter, the river’s stable temperature from the Watauga Dam maintains year-round opportunities, with midges and small nymphs being crucial during this season. Accessible features include the Watauga Dam, various access points, Hatchery Creek for catch-and-release fishing, prolific insect hatches, and nearby fly shops and guides. Always check local regulations and permits to preserve this exceptional fishery responsibly.
