The South Toe River, sourced from Mount Mitchell and Pisgah National Forest, is a haven for fishing enthusiasts. Its pristine waters are home to thriving populations of wild rainbow, brook, and brown trout, thanks to the convergence of Right Prong and Left Prong streams. Anglers will find a mix of regulations along the river. The upper sections, governed by Wild Regulations, offer a challenging experience, perfect for seasoned anglers. On the other hand, the stretch from Black Mountain Campground to Pisgah Game Land Border is a paradise for catch-and-release aficionados. Downstream, the lower South Toe River presents stocked fishing areas with wade-friendly access points, creating an ideal setting for dry fly and nymph fishing that’s suitable for all skill levels year-round.

Enjoy a tranquil kayaking or rafting journey along the South Toe River, starting your adventure near the Carolina Hemlocks Recreation Area. As you glide downstream, you’ll be immersed in the breathtaking beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The river offers a delightful blend of gentle rapids and serene stretches, making it a suitable route for both beginners and experienced paddlers. The take-out point near the Black Mountain Campground ensures a convenient and picturesque conclusion to your water excursion.
