Outdoor Access

Fairplay, Colorado, nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, offers a haven for outdoor enthusiasts with its diverse array of recreational opportunities and stunning natural beauty.

Hiking Trails:

Fairplay boasts an array of hiking trails catering to all skill levels, from leisurely strolls to rugged mountain treks. Explore the McCurdy Mountain Trail in the Buffalo Peaks Wilderness for a challenging ascent to panoramic vistas. For a more moderate hike, the Montgomery Reservoir Trail offers a picturesque stroll along the water’s edge with opportunities for wildlife viewing. Families will enjoy the Beaver Creek Trail in Pike National Forest, meandering through lush forests and open meadows. Georgia Pass is located northeast of Fairplay, approximately 25-35 miles away. It is situated near the town of Breckenridge and can be accessed via Forest Service roads from Highway 9. Georgia Pass offers scenic views and recreational opportunities for mountain biking, hiking, and off-roading.

Mount Quandary
Mount Quandary, standing at 14,265 feet, is one of Colorado’s iconic Fourteeners located near the town of Breckenridge. The standard route to the summit begins at the Quandary Peak Trailhead, which is accessible via Blue Lakes Road off State Highway 9. The trail, approximately 6.75 miles round trip, offers a moderate ascent with an elevation gain of around 3,450 feet. Hikers can expect a well-defined path through alpine meadows, gradually transitioning to rocky terrain as they ascend the eastern slopes of the mountain. The trail is popular among outdoor enthusiasts due to its accessibility and stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Sawatch Range. However, it’s important to note that even though Mount Quandary is considered one of the more “accessible” Fourteeners, it still poses challenges, including exposure to rapidly changing weather conditions and potential altitude-related issues. Therefore, proper preparation, including bringing plenty of water, food, appropriate clothing layers, navigation aids, and knowledge of mountain safety, is essential for a successful and enjoyable hike to the summit of Mount Quandary.

Fly Fishing Streams and Access Points:

Fairplay is blessed with an abundance of pristine fly fishing streams, most notably the South Platte River and its tributaries. Anglers flock to renowned sections like the Dream Stream, a stretch of the South Platte known for its trophy-sized trout. Access points like the Tomahawk State Wildlife Area and Charlie Meyers State Wildlife Area provide convenient entry to these coveted fishing spots.

North Fork Fork of the South Platte River

Due to unpredictable water flows and the lack of bugs in the area, the trout in large sections of this river are sparse and don’t typically grow to be too big. However, outside of Bailey there are said to be a couple of spots where 8″-14″ fish are common.

The lower section of the South Platte River below Foxton Road is also promising. This obviously isn’t the section of river you seek out if you’re a die-hard angler looking to catch the biggest trout of your life. However, it’s a great close-to-home option if you’re learning how to fly-fish or want to non-stressful place to cast out your line.

Wellington Lake

This serene alpine lake sits 40 minutes away from Fairplay. A privately owned 167-acre trophy fishery, Wellington Lake is stocked with Rainbow, Cutbow, Brown, Brook, Tiger, and Palomino Trout, and offers ice fishing during the winter. This spot is catch-and-release only, and an entrance fee is required. The benefit of fishing here extends to inexperienced anglers looking for a promising place to get started, and those camping in the area who want to fish (fishing is included with the camping fee). Other strict rules apply while fishing here, like skipping live and artificial bait.

Upper Deer Creek and Craig Creek

Some of the creeks near Fairplay offer stellar opportunities to catch trout. Located in the Pike National Forest, the section of the Upper Deer Creek northwest of Bailey past the Deer Creek Campground is said to hold sizable Brook and Brown Trout. Craig Creek, which is located in the Lost Creek Wilderness west of town, is reportedly brimming with small brook trout. It takes five miles to access the creek and the fish here aren’t trophy material by any stretch of the imagination, but the opportunity to fish in such a serene and remote setting will be worth the hike for many anglers.

Mountain Biking:

Mountain bikers will delight in Fairplay’s extensive network of trails offering exhilarating rides and breathtaking scenery. The Colorado Trail, passing through nearby Kenosha Pass, offers thrilling singletrack sections with sweeping views of the surrounding peaks. For a challenging adventure, tackle the Georgia Pass Loop, a demanding ride featuring technical descents and lung-busting climbs. Closer to town, the Boreas Pass Road provides a scenic gravel ride suitable for riders of all levels, with panoramic vistas of the Mosquito Range.
