The Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area is a protected area located just 10 miles north of Weeki Wachee. It offers a vast expanse of sandhill, mesic hammock, and forested wetland habitats, as well as three nearby satellite tracts. You’ll find a remnant population of Florida black bear, gopher tortoises, Sherman’s fox squirrel, and many imperiled snake species in this region of Florida. You can explore the area by bike or on foot, with two interpretive trails and plenty of unpaved roads and old logging trams to choose from. Hunting is also popular in the area, but safety is always a top priority due to the presence of underwater caves that house populations of troglobitic invertebrate species. Bird and butterfly enthusiasts will also enjoy the species diversity found in the area.
