Step Back in Time: Sapelo Cabin
Sapelo Island, GA
Escape to a true refuge from your daily grind - located on a remote island, the Sapelo Cabin is a newly built home with all modern conveniences but the reclaimed materials and rustic touches will bring you back to days gone by when life was experienced at a slower pace.
The cabin’s large front and rear screened-in porches beckon you to watch and listen to nature in a tranquil setting. The cabin includes 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The master bedroom has a queen sized bed and ensuite bathroom. The second bedroom has a full sized bed. The third “bunk room” has 1 twin bed and 2 twin bunk beds. Hammocks, rocking chairs and a picnic table is available on the back porch. Wi-fi is available. There is no washer, dryer, or dishwasher.
The Sapelo Cabin is filled with amenities that you'll love. Entering the home you'll note the large and impressive fireplace, that is complimented by an outdoor fireplace on the reverse, complete with cooking attachments. The cabin also features a large front porch and screened back porch. The back porch is filled with seating and dining areas, and is a great place to gather year-round. You will also find a small griddle and small grill out back, both of which are perfectly sized to cook for a full house. There is also a full kitchen available for your everyday needs. Finally, the house is full of maps to guide your Sapelo excursions, and the owner is just a phone call away, if you'd like some recommendations on activities.
The Sapelo Cabin is situated in the Historic Community of Hog Hammock, with the remainder of the island largely consisting of Georgia Wildlife Management Area. While no vehicle is provided with the rental, we can put you in touch with several vehicle options.
Historical sites like the Reynolds Mansion, Behavior Cemetery, and the Lighthouse(s) are easily accessible. With a little more exploration, you can get to old plantation ruins and Native American shell middens (structures) erected thousands of years ago by the Guale tribe. The island is also full of wildlife! Deer, wild boar, and birds are plentiful. Along the freshwater canals and ponds, it is not uncommon to see alligators, water snakes and turtles. Please do note that the island is inhabited by several venomous species of snakes.
For anglers, there are ample opportunities to harvest Sea Trout, Redfish, Black Drum, and Flounder. These species can be targeted from many of the trails and roads along the water. We suggest the Cabretta causeway and creeks or the "Big Hole" located about a mile north of old beach road. Both have plentiful fishing opportunities. Artificial lures are productive year-round, and if you would like to use bait you will either need to catch it or bring it. Hunting is also allowed on the WMA, but you will want to confer with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources regulations to determine open seasons.
