Outdoor Activities

Fishing: Chattooga River
The Chattooga River offers fly fishing opportunities across North Carolina, Georgia, and South Carolina. The upper section in North Carolina provides low-pressure fishing in pristine forest settings, while the lower section along Highway 28 is a Delayed Harvest Stream with brook, rainbow, and brown trout thriving under regular stocking.

For beginners, Burrell’s Ford Campground is ideal for abundant trout. The Chattooga River Delayed Harvest section enforces catch-and-release regulations from October to May. Hiking upstream offers better fishing opportunities with fewer anglers. The river section from Reed Creek to Ellicott Rock is generously stocked by Georgia and South Carolina, providing different challenges and tactics for anglers.

The Chattooga River, the Southeast’s sole Wild & Scenic River, lures paddlers of all skill levels. Whether you choose private rafting or a commercial outfitter like Nantahala Outdoor Center, Southeastern Expeditions, or Wildwater Ltd, expect excitement. Guided trips include experienced guides, top-notch safety gear, and a riverside lunch. Conquer the river’s exhilarating rapids, including the renowned Five Falls.
