If you prefer, there are several dive operators that offer charters to popular dive sites in the Gulf of Mexico.
For a fun-filled day with the family, take a Scallop Tour along the Nature Coast's miles of pristine, clear-water grass flats. Snorkel in 2-4 feet of water and enjoy the underwater scenery, spotting a variety of fish, turtles, seahorses, conch shells, corals, sponges, and of course, scallops. And after a day of adventure, indulge in the wonderfully tasty little morsels of bay scallop goodness! After the sun sets, explore the shallows in search of sheepshead, flounder, black drum, snapper, mullet, and other tasty treats just below the surface. Our Gigging Charter Trips last for 5 hours and take place in the backwaters of Crystal River and Ozello, where you'll navigate the mazes of mangrove islands, creek mouths, and oyster bars. We can recommend some local experts to make sure your night stalking adventure is a success!
The Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area is a protected area located just 10 miles north of Weeki Wachee. It offers a vast expanse of sandhill, mesic hammock, and forested wetland habitats, as well as three nearby satellite tracts. You'll find a remnant population of Florida black bear, gopher tortoises, Sherman's fox squirrel, and many imperiled snake species in this region of Florida. You can explore the area by bike or on foot, with two interpretive trails and plenty of unpaved roads and old logging trams to choose from. Hunting is also popular in the area, but safety is always a top priority due to the presence of underwater caves that house populations of troglobitic invertebrate species. Bird and butterfly enthusiasts will also enjoy the species diversity found in the area.
